Maas was publishing an adult fiction urban fantasy novel I wasn’t sure what to think. Her young adult series are already very Adult themed. I will add a warning Straight off the bat -there is a lot of cursing and sexual references rather than darker adult themes.

I am very much be a fan of Sarah’s original young adult series : A Court of Thorns & Roses and Throne of Glass and so I thought I was going to love this book from the get go. I won’t lie, I didn’t. I found this book to be very slow starting it took me maybe 100-150 pages to decide I wanted to finish it. That has never happened with any of Sarah’s previous books. I will admit the first chapter and how the book started completely blew my mind before slowing down.

However after that explosive event and the first 100 pages the plot began to capture my attention and I found myself being introduced to secondary characters that I knew were going to play a much larger part down the line and original characters beginning to flesh out into very interesting figures. I somehow found myself racing to get to the end to see how the now very quick paced and exciting story line would pan out. I was not disappointed, I very quickly found myself wishing 2020 would just zoom by so a hopefully un-delayed 2021 sequel would be released. If you are an adult fantasy genre reader and have ever wondered why your teenager flies through the Sarah J. Maas books this title might be the one to whet your appetite and then encourage you to read Sarah’s previous young adult fiction books. I cannot wait to see what happens to Bryce and her companions – hopefully, next year.

Available to borrow on Bolinda Borrowbox in ebook and audiobook format.
