{"id":2536,"date":"2021-02-04T15:53:18","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T15:53:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kildarelibrariesblog.com\/?p=2536"},"modified":"2021-02-04T15:53:18","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T15:53:18","slug":"what-is-ireland-reads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/what-is-ireland-reads\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Ireland Reads?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/twitter-social-media-post-2.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2542\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ireland Reads is a new campaign to get the whole country reading this month in the lead up to a national day of reading on Thursday, February 25.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Irish libraries have teamed up with publishers, booksellers, authors and others for the campaign which is part of the government Keep Well initiative and aims to celebrate reading and all the benefits it can have for wellbeing and enjoyment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The campaign is asking everyone to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsqueeze in a read\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 on Thursday, February 25.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is reading important?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a>Research shows that&nbsp;reading for pleasure is really important for all of us \u00e2\u20ac\u201c no matter our age.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For children, of course, it has a huge positive impact on their cognitive development and literacy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For adults, studies have found that reading for pleasure enhances empathy, understanding of the self, and is effective in combatting loneliness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, many of the activities we used to take for granted are not available to us, but you can always enjoy a good book \u00e2\u20ac\u201c or a newspaper or magazine.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading offers a way to escape and keep mentally active, and to lift our mood, and it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to be a solitary experience \u00e2\u20ac\u201c you can read with your kids of course, or you might use reading to connect with friends and family. Maybe through a book club, or just swapping recommendations.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>How can people join in the campaign?\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t matter how long you read for or what you read, it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t matter whether you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re an avid reader, a reluctant reader, a lapsed reader or a new reader, this campaign is for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Take the pledge to read at irelandreads.ie&nbsp;<\/strong><br>A new website&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irelandreads.ie\/\">www.irelandreads.ie<\/a>&nbsp;has been set up where the public can pledge to read on \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcIreland Reads\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Day, February 25<sup>th<\/sup>, and check to see how much time has been pledged by the Irish public so far.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Get a book recommendation at irelandreads.ie\u00c2\u00a0<br><\/strong>The Ireland Reads website also offers book recommendations, suited to a person\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s interests and the time they have available. There are more than 800 recommendations from librarians all around the country.\u00c2\u00a0A website user can simply enter their favourite type of book and how long they would like to read each day and the website will offer a suitable book suggestion and work out how long it will take to complete \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a couch to 5k for books!\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Attend an event\u00c2\u00a0<br><\/strong>Campaign partners and libraries all over the country will be running \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcIreland Reads\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 initiatives and events throughout February in the build up to Thursday, February 25<sup>th<\/sup>. You can get details at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irelandreads.ie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> irelandreads.ie\u00c2\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Share on social media&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please use #IrelandReads or #SqueezeInARead and share your pledge to read on social media or tell others about your favorite books, recommended reads or the book that got you through Covid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>How can people access books during Covid?\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While libraries are not currently open to the public for borrowing due to Covid restrictions, library members can use the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/library.bolindadigital.com\/kildare\" target=\"_blank\">library Borrowbox service online <\/a>and choose from more than 43,000 eBooks and 33,000 eAudiobooks.\u00c2\u00a0Not a library member yet don&#8217;t worry you can join online for free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.librariesireland.ie\/join-your-library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 70,000 people joined up to use the library Borroxbox service in 2020, a 150% jump in the number of new users compared to the previous year. On average more than 2,000 eBooks and 2,300 audiobooks were loaned each day in 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re also encouraging people to support their local bookshops. They have had a really tough time throughout Covid and have done all they can to keep going, keep taking orders and keep people stocked up with books. You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll find a link to a map of bookshops on IrelandReads.ie&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Ireland Reads is not just about books \u00e2\u20ac\u201c if you want to read a <a href=\"https:\/\/lgma.rbdigitalglobal.com\/search\/emagazine?page-index=0&amp;page-size=60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">magazine<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lgma.rbdigitalglobal.com\/search\/emagazine?page-index=0&amp;page-size=60\">,<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressreader.com\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">newspaper <\/a>or a comic, that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s great too!\u00c2\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do libraries offer?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In ordinary times, library members can borrow from more than 12 million items.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, while libraries are unfortunately closed to the public, our online services are still available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members can access&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">44,000 eBooks<br>33,000 eAudiobooks<br>4,000 magazines<br>2,500 online newspapers from over 100 countries,<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is this campaign just about library books?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No! We are encouraging people to support local bookshops too.
