{"id":2705,"date":"2021-02-22T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kildarelibrariesblog.com\/?p=2705"},"modified":"2021-02-24T14:38:22","modified_gmt":"2021-02-24T14:38:22","slug":"art-craft-rock-painting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/art-craft-rock-painting\/","title":{"rendered":"Art &amp; Craft &#8211; Rock Painting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"990\" height=\"222\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/image.jpeg?w=990\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2708\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>by Craig, Naas Library<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m going to be doing some Rock Painting with you, and turning a plain old rock from the garden, into a colourful Ladybird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rock Painting can be fun for any age group and is something creative that you can do together as a family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"468\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/screenshot-2021-02-24-at-14.23.47.png?w=468\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2709\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First you need to gather your materials- You will need <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A Pencil \u00e2\u20ac\u201c For marking out<\/li><li>Assorted Paint Brushes<\/li><li>Acrylic Paints \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Acrylic specifically because it is water based for a easy clean up, yet it becomes waterproof once it has dried making it ideal for the garden.<\/li><li>A jar of water<\/li><li>Kitchen paper<\/li><li>A sheet of wallpaper or similar (to protect the table!)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"462\" height=\"254\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/screenshot-2021-02-24-at-14.24.33.png?w=462\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2710\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next you need to find a suitable Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can either think of what you want to paint (in my case I wanted to paint a Ladybird), or you can find a rock you like, and then think of how you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to paint it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:34px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"418\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/screenshot-2021-02-24-at-14.25.53.png?w=418\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2712\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to get the paint to stick properly, we need the rocks to be clear of mud and dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quick wash under the tap will be suficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dry it off with the Paper Towel, as we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want the rock to be too wet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"418\" height=\"272\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/screenshot-2021-02-24-at-14.30.02.png?w=418\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2716\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we go at it with a paintbrush, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s worth marking out the lines with a pencil, for where you want to paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Ladybird, this involves a line lengthwise, to mark the separation of the shell, and a line crosswise at about a quarter of the way down, to mark where the head will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"426\" height=\"262\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/screenshot-2021-02-24-at-14.31.08.png?w=426\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2718\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now we get to the really fun part &#8211; laying on the colour!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using a medium sized brush, paint the first coat of whichever colour you wish to use. I went wth the red. Try to follow the lines you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve drawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"424\" height=\"274\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/screenshot-2021-02-24-at-14.31.41.png?w=424\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2720\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The red I used didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t cover very well, so I had to leave it to dry for about an hour, before giving it a second coat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"438\" height=\"298\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/screenshot-2021-02-24-at-14.32.10.png?w=438\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2721\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I painted the black parts it covered well with only one coat, so you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll need to use your own judgement here as to whether a second coat is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will need more drying time, if you wish to paint any other colours, such as the white spots you can see in the next image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"428\" height=\"302\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/screenshot-2021-02-24-at-14.32.31.png?w=428\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2723\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And here is the finished Ladybird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you look at images of ladybirds, you will notice that they are symmetrical. The spots on one half of the shell are mirrored on the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also tend to have white spots around the head, so bear that in mind if you are doing the same rock that I did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:26px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"436\" height=\"292\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/screenshot-2021-02-24-at-14.36.08.png?w=436\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2724\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re finished, be sure to clean your brushes and any other equipment and surfaces that got paint on them with water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Once acrylic paint dries it is waterproof and needs harsh chemicals to remove it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"426\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/screenshot-2021-02-24-at-14.36.22.png?w=426\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2725\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s our finished Ladybird, out in the garden where she belongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hope you enjoy painting your own rocks, you can make them look like other things, cover them in patterns, or even just colours on a selection of rocks.
