CLAREGATE STREET DEMOLISHED

Leinster Leader 17 April 1971

Demolition begins in tiny street

Long threatening comes at last!

This week work begins on the demolition of a block of buildings on the narrow part of Claregate Street. It is the first phase in the scheme of demolition necessary for the proposed widening of the street, which surely must be one of the narrowest main through fares in the country. One of the buildings being demolished on Tuesday was the former licensed premises of Mr. John Boyle. One of the oldest licensed houses in Kildare, it has a varied history, including a period when it served as an R.I.C. Barracks. Quite recently, a visitor well versed in archaeology, traced the architecture of a doorway at the rear of the licensed premises way back to the 15th Century.
