DCM FOR SGT JOHN KERRY
Leinster Leader 29 January 1916
Sergeant J. Kerry, 1st Seaforth Highlanders
Sergeant John Kerry, 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders has just been presented with the D.C.M. by the Earl of Shaftesbury at the Convalescent Camp, Eastbourne. The following appeared in orders:
— 8062 Sergeant Kerry, J., 1st 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. For gallant conduct on 20th December, 1914 at Givenchy, when he did very effective work in counter-bombing the enemy, and for great coolness in going forward close to the German trenches to ascertain the situation. Has been previously brought to notice for his good work.
He was born in Dublin, being a son of the late George Kerry, stud groom ol the Kildare Hunt during the mastership of Col. R. St. Leger Moore, C.B. Sergeant Kerry spent a huge portion of his youth in Naas, where he was educated in the St. David’s School under Mr. S. A. England. His brother Harry is sergeant in the Rifle Brigade, and another brother, Fred Kerry, resides at Garryard, Johnstown, Straffan, and was a well-known member of the Naas hockey team.
We regret to say that Sergeant John Kerry, who was severely wounded, has been pronounced unfit for further service; in the field, which is a great disappointment to him. as he was most anxious to return to his regiment and assist in the final victory which he feels certain the Allies will ere long attain.
