DEATH OF LORD F. FITZGERALD

Lord Frederick Fitzgerald died at Carton, Maynooth, aged 77. He was a son of the fourth Duke of Leinster and uncle of the present Duke. He served in the K.R.R. in the Afghan War, 1878-80 (medal with two clasps and bronze star), the S. African War, 1881, the Egyptian Campaign, 1882, and the Nile Expedition, 1884-85, retiring with the rank of Lieut.-Colonel. He was, since retirement, a Commissioner of National Education. He was brother of Lord Walter Fitzgerald, Kilkea Castle, who died recently.

Death of Lord Frederick Fitzgerald

We regret to announce the death of Lord Frederick Fitzgerald, which took place at Carton House on Saturday last, in the sixty-seventh year of his age. He was born on the 18th January 1857. Lord Frederick, who was well-known in Kildare and many parts of Ireland, was a son of the fourth Duke of Leinster. He was educated at Eton, and when he left that famous school he joined the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. He served in the Afghan war of 1878-80, and gained a medal with two clasps, and also a bronze star. He saw service in South Africa in 1881, and took part in the Egyptian campaign in 1882. For his service in the Nile expedition, 1884-85, he was awarded a medal with two clasps, and a bronze star. He retired from the Army with the rank of Lieut.-Colonel. He was a Justice of the Peace for Co. Kildare and a Commissioner of National Education in Ireland.

[Note: The age at death, reported in the Kildare Observer, is correct. Frederick FitzGerald was the son of Charles FitzGerald, 4th Duke of Leinster and Caroline Fitzgerald (Sutherland-Leveson-Gower), Duchess of Leinster. He died on 8 March 1924.]
