Death of Mr. J. N. Devoy at 84
Mr John N. Devoy. for many years chairman of directors of Castlemaine-Perkin’s Ltd., one of Queensland’s oldest citizens and best known businessmen, and a founder of athletics in this State, died at his Paddlngton home last night, at the age of 84.
Deceased, who was born in County Kildare, Ireland, came to Queensland at the age of eight. At the age of 13 he joined the staff of Raff and Co., the original branch of the Castlemaine Brewery Co. Ltd., and in his 70 years of business rose from junior clerk to managing director. At the age of 80. Mr Devoy was justifiably proud of his 67 years with the company. Though he was the founder of Queensland athletics, his first love was rowing, and he was wont to remark. “I did not give up rowing till I was 70 years of age.” He won his first race in 1873, and in 1883 rowed bow in the champion four oar skiff, and stroked the champion eight oar boat. He was also a member of the Queensland eight.
Mr Devoy also devoted much of his spare time to military duties, and served with the Queensland Royal Artillery, and was a captain in the Queensland Irish Volunteers. Deceased did much good quietly as many of his friends know. He has left a wide circle of friends all over Australia.
