GRAVEYARD TRANSCRIPTIONS – LEIXLIP, CONFEY GRAVEYARD
Leixlip, Confey Gravestones
Compiled and checked by
John Colgan and David Cormack, Leixlip.
Confey graveyard, just north of Leixlip town, contains the ruined, medieval parish church of St Columba, Confey. The ruin is surrounded by a small graveyard containing burial stones of the 18th and 19th centuries. This graveyard is located at the northwesterly corner of a much larger rectangular plot of about half an acre which the Celbridge Rural District Council (RDC) purchased from Lieut. Col. Richard A. Hartley in July, 1910. In November 1914 Celbridge RDC “petitioned” the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin, Dr. Joseph Ferguson, to take a portion of this, five perches in area, and “to separate the same from all common and profane uses” – as the deed of consecration put it – from the remainder “forever as a place for the burial of Protestants alone”. In the rectangular extension is a linear section of about six grave rows deep, which contains the oldest 20th century graves. This linear section is immediately within the western boundary wall of the graveyard, and runs from the entrance on Confey Road northwards to the southern boundary of graves within the curtilage of the medieval church ruin. Originally, this linear section was divided into the aforementioned Protestant section to the south; and a Roman Catholic one to the north. Recent burials are not segregated. The remainder of Confey graveyard is modern and is not surveyed here; the latter is the principal graveyard serving the wider Leixlip community at this time. Since the establishment in the 1980s of a Roman Catholic parish commonly called Confey, which is located in the townland of Newtown and includes few persons from Confey townland, the addresses of some deceased persons from Newtown, Leixlip are sometimes erroneously described as ‘Confey.’ During the course of the field work the authors were informed that during the flu pandemic of 1918/19 many local children died; they were quickly buried in mass graves in the oldest part of the cemetery. There is no headstone to commemorate them and we have not confirmed this assertion. The field work for this survey was completed in May, 2000.
