Great War Veteran Dies

Leinster Leader 22 February 1958

General regret was occasioned by the death of Mr. Michael A. Toft, which occurred at his residence, Maddenstown, Curragh. Aged 76, deceased had been in failing health for some time.

A well-known and highly respected figure over a wide area, the late Mr. Toft was a World War I veteran serving as Company Sergeant Major in the Royal Engineers and the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was awarded the Mons Star and other decorations for gallantry in action. For some years prior to his death he had been Secretary of the Brownstown branch, British Legion, having always been actively interested in Legion affairs.

The funeral to Carna was large and representative, Very Revd. J. J. Kelly, P.P. Suncroft, officiating. Chief mourners were: Mrs. B. Toft (widow); Patrick, Albert and Cornelius (sons); Mrs. S. Macpherson. Mrs. D. Byrne, Mrs. Aylott, Mrs. Gibbon, Mrs. Mahony (daughters); Mrs. P. Toft, Mrs. A. Toft, Mrs. C. Toft (daughters-in-law); grandchildren and other relatives.
