Kildare Man Wins Military Medal

It has been learned with interest in Kildare, where so many of his relatives reside, that Corporal John Talbot, Royal Dragoons, has been awarded the Military Medal for bravery on the battlefield. Corporal Talbot is the only son of the late Mr. Thomas Talbot, of Harold’s Cross, Dublin, and cousin of Mrs. L. Connolly, Railway Hotel, Kildare. As a young man Corporal Talbot served a few years in the Royal Irish Constabulary in Tyrone, where he married afterwards joining the Brecknoshire police.

At the outbreak of the war he transferred his services to the Royal Dragoons. The inhabitants of Brynmanor, of which town he was resident before the war opened, are now about to show their recognition and appreciation of his bravery in the field. A public meeting was held at Brynmanor, including the District Council, the War Committee and the Comforts Committee, Mr. J. Howell presiding, when it was unanimously decided to give a public reception and presentation of a gold watch and chain to Corporal J. J. Talbot, Royal Dragoons, an old inhabitant of the town and ex-policeman, in recognition of his being awarded the military medal for bravery on the battlefield. It was decided that the Secretary should write the Commanding Officer for leave for him to come home from the front to receive the recognition.

Arrangements have been made by the different public boards to meet Corporal Talbot on his arrival, and it was arranged that the police should from a guard of honour on his arrival. A local paper states it was decided that Mr. T. Bailey, J.P., Chairman of the local Council, will preside when the presentation will be made by Mr. Jareth Howells (Chairman of the Comforts Committee); other speakers to be Alderman W. Roberts for the Council, and Mr. E. Williams for the War Committee.
