KILDARE OFFICER AWARDED M.B.E.

Athy people may know Capt. R. H. Bloomer, The Buffs, (now stationed at Lisburn) to whom the award of M.B.E. is made on the British Coronation Honours List. His father was well known and a popular figure in Athy where he was attached for many years to the Post Office sorting staff.

Captain Bloomer, whose home is at Glenageary, Co. Dublin, is a son of Mrs. W. Wilson and the late Mr. R. Bloomer and a stepson of Mr. William Wilson, General Secretary of the Irish Sub-Postmasters’ Union, 47 Sandycove Road, Dun Laoghaire. His father died on active service during the war.

After receiving his commission he saw service in Palestine, Egypt, North Africa, Abyssinia and in various parts of Europe during the Second World War. He was in the retreat from Dunkirk. Apart from the M.B.E., he received six decorations for his military service.
