LANDMARK IS TO TUMBLE

Leinster Leader 9 August 1975

Landmark is to tumble

Work is to start this week on the removal of one of the best-known landmarks in Naas – the water tower at the Fair Green. The 75-year-old tower is to be demolished down to the first floor which will then be reconstructed as a fire station.

The fire engine has been located in the lower part of the tower for years. While the demolition and reconstruction is being carried out, it will be housed in the yard at the rear of the Town Hall. The work is being carried out by Murphy International, Great Connell, Newbridge, and is to start within days.

The tower was built by Naas Guardians at the turn of the century on land leased from the War Department at £1 a year. Up to recent years its giant tank held the town’s water supply. When demolition has been carried out, work will start on landscaping the Fair Green. This project is being carried out as part of the European Architectural Heritage Year programme. A decorative wall has been erected around the green and a new footpath has been provided. It is hoped to have it completed this year.
