MAGNIFICENT MEETING IN CARBURY

A great demonstration was held last Sunday at Carbury, a historic village about three miles from Edenderry. The patriotic men of this district joined the Edenderry Father Kearns and Colonel Party branch of the ’98 Centenary Committee, and right royally did they turn up in huge numbers to the meeting. But this was expected, for, with Mr Kane P.L.G., [V.P. Edenderry ’98 Club], at the head of affairs in Carbury district, there was bound to be a big representation from that quarter. Splendid contingents arrived from Kilcock, with brass band, Ballyboggan with fife and drum band; Broadford, with fife and drum band; but beyond doubt the best turn out to the meeting was the Edenderry ’98 Club. The members of this branch – which is one of the best in Ireland – are now so well organised that they march in procession more like war veterans that ordinary civilians, and on Sunday last they mustered fully 800 strong, fronted by their splendid brass band.

The chair was taken by the patriotic Parish Priest of Carbury, and W Barry [hon. sec. Edenderry ’98 Club] was appointed hon. secretary to the meeting. The usual resolutions were proposed by the Rev. Father Keating, C.C., Carbury, seconded by Mr John Field, Kilcock. The other speakers were – Messrs J Heffernan, Kildare; P. O’Brien, treasurer Edenderry ’98 Club; William Kennedy, president Edenderry ’98 Club; William Kinsella, hon, sec. Kilcock ’98 Club. It was considered that there wer 3.500 people present. A vote of thanks, proposed by Mr William Kennedy, and seconded by E. Wyer, P.L.G., brough the meeting to a close.
