MR. G. W. GRAHAM, KILDARE

Leinster Leader, 17 May 1952

Mr. G. W. Graham, Kildare

Mr. George W. Graham, Grey Abbey House, Kildare, whose death occurred at the Drogheda Memorial Hospital, Curragh, after a short illness, was one of Kildare’s leading businessmen, and had been in business in the town for over 45 years. Deceased, who was of advanced years, was a native of Donadea but spent the greater part of his life in Kildare.

The late Mr. Graham purchased Grey Abbey House and farm almost 50 years ago. Shortly before the outbreak of the First World War he acquired the grocery premises and bakery at The Square, Kildare.

Concentrating on the bakery branch of the business he quickly expanded operations and output until the bakery became one of the best known in the county. He remained the principal when the business became a limited company some years ago.

Deceased was one of the most highly respected and popular figures in the town, and all his life took a very keen interest in the affairs of the town and in the welfare of the townspeople. He was associated with a number of parochial committees, etc., established for various purposes through the years and his assistance and active interest in the work of these committees proved invaluable.

He was a founder member of the Guild of Irish Bakers and acted as President of that Guild for a number of years. A daughter, Miss Alice Graham, is now Vice-President.

Main interests of the deceased lay in farming and business. He made many friends among all classes and in all walks of life and his passing occasioned general regret.

The very large attendance at his funeral to New Cemetery, on Monday, was a striking tribute to the extent of his popularity and that of the bereaved family. Old Kildare residents described the cortege as the biggest they had ever seen.

Chief mourners were:- Robert (Bert), William and Charles (sons), Mrs. H. Davis, Mrs. T. Glynn, Lilian and Alice (daughters), Mrs. R. Graham, Mrs. W. Graham (daughters-in-law), Mr. H. Davis, Mr. T. Glynn (sons-in-law), Sheila and Thomas Graham, Marion and John Graham, Denise, Desmond and Alan Glynn (grand-children), Mrs. C. Maybrick (sister-in-law), Mr. C. Maybrick.
