Leinster Leader 3 June 1967

Mr. Thomas Germaine

A man who was a keen follower of every form of open-air sport and games in the town for over half a century, and was himself a noted athlete in his younger years, died last week at the age of about 79.  He was Mr. Thomas Germaine, and he died at the home of his son, Mr. John Germaine, Meeting Lane, Athy.  He joined the British Army to fight in World War No. 1. and was invalided out after being wounded in battle.  He excelled at any game he played, whether it was Gaelic football, rugby, soccer or hockey.  A powerful swimmer he taught many youngsters to swim, and over the years saved several from drowning in the bathing waters around Athy.  Through his death, Athy lost one of its most familiar figures.  Mrs. Christina Kelly, McDonnell Drive, Athy, is his daughter.  He was interred in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
