MRS. M. CUMMINS, LATE OF DROICHEAD NUA
Leinster Leader 12 July 1958
Mrs. M. Cummins, Late of Droichead Nua
The death occurred on Saturday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. G. Bobbett, Sandycove, Dublin, of Mrs. Mary Cummins, who for many years played a major part in the business life of Droichead Nua and was a very well-known and highly respected figure.
A native of Monasterevan, the late Mrs. Cummins was widow of Edward J. Cummins and sister-in-law of the late Senator Wm. Cummins. After the death of her husband the late Mrs. Cummins took over the running of the Central Hotel, Droichead Nua, and for many years managed the affairs of the hotel, one of the busiest in the county.
During the British occupation the hotel was a favourite rendezvous for the British officers stationed in Newbridge and Curragh Camp, being then known as the Prince of Wales. The sentiments of the Cummins’ family lay in the National direction however, and the hotel also provided a good cover for meetings of the leaders of the local freedom fight, many anti-British activities being planned there, right under the noses of the British officers.
Deceased continued to run the hotel until after the death of her brother-in-law, Senator Wm. Cummins who played a very prominent part in the development of Droichead Nua. She sold the premises to Mrs. E. Farrell about 10 years ago and has since resided with her daughter in Dublin. The hotel has now become the headquarters and offices of the Curragh Bloodstock Agency.
The late Mrs. Cummins was very charitable and was held in the highest esteem throughout the district. The news of her death came as a blow to her many friends and removes a link with the early development of Droichead Nua, a development in which the deceased lady played no small part.
Interment took place on Tuesday in Glasnevin, following Requiem Mass in St. Joseph’s Church, Glasthule.
