Late Mr. P. Cosgrave

Mr. Patrick (Paddy) Cosgrave who died recently at Naas District Hospital was one of the oldest residents of Castledermot. Paddy, a retired farmer, was eighty-nine years old but was out and about, attending Mass or walking down by the Green, which he loved, until quite recently.

He was one of the oldest survivors of the War of Independence in which he played a prominent part and during which he was captured and interned by British forces. He later served as a Captain in the army of the Irish Free State.

A cousin of the late President W.T. Cosgrave, Paddy was a founder member of Cumann na nGael in Castledermot.

The remains were removed to the Church of the Assumption, Castledermot and the burial took place after Requiem Mass in Coltstown Cemetery. Very Rev. Fr. Brian Fitzgerald, P.P., Castledermot, Rev. D. Cantwell, C.C., and Rev. J. Hassett, P.C., officiated.

The attendance included Mr. Liam Cosgrave, cousin, Mr. Alan Dukes, Minister for Finance, Mr. Bernard Durkan, T.D., Mr. Godfrey Timmons, T.D., Mr. Paddy Malone, former T.D., Mr. Reggie Lalor, K.C.C., Mr. Jim McEvoy, K.C.C., Mr. Michael McWey, K.C.C., and members of the Kildare County Executive Fine Gael.

Paddy is survived by his widow Rosie, Philip and John, sons; Mrs. Mary O’Sullivan, daughter; Martin, son-in-law; Mrs. Lucy Cosgrave, daughter-in-law; four grandchildren; Pat Mahon, brother-in-law; Mrs. Kathleen O’Connell and Mrs. May Quinn, sisters-in-law, nephews and niece.
