PATRICK O’CARROLL, NAAS

Leinster Leader 20 June 1959

OBITUARY

PATRICK O’CARROLL NAAS

The death took place unexpectedly on Tuesday week of Mr. Partrick O’Carroll of St. David’s Terrace, Naas, Rates Inspector for Kildare County Council. He had been working as usual during the day but feeling unwell had gone to bed and shortly after medical and spiritual aid had been summoned he passed away.

Native of Kilfinnane, Co. Limerick, he spent some of his early years in South Africa, but came to Naas when still very young, and was educated there. He enrolled in the Naas Company of the I.R.A. and took part in a number of engagements during the War of Independence. Afterwards he joined the Anti-Treaty side and became Battalion Commandant of the South Dublin Brigade and in 1923 was interned in Newbridge. He was appointed clerical officer by Kildare County Council in 1925 and was later given the position of rates inspector, a post he held up to the time of his death. He was Vice-Chairman of the Co. Kildare Brigade of the Old I.R.A.

He was a son of the late Mr. Mark O’Carroll, Naas, who was prominent in the Labour movement in Kildare for many years, and who also acted as a Sinn Fein District Justice during the troubled times. The late Mr. O’Carroll was of a quiet unassuming nature and was extremely popular with his colleagues on the County Council staffs, and with the general public.

His death was a great shock to everyone and he is sincerely mourned.

The remains were removed to the Church of Our Lady and St. David, the coffin being draped in the tri-colour, and Old I.R.A. members forming a Guard of Honour. There was a large attendance at the funeral to St. Corban’s Cemetery where full military honours were rendered.
