Possibility Of A New Industry For Ballitore (1927)
POSSIBILITY OF A NEW INDUSTRY
The Leinster Leader of 20th August 1927 reported on the proposal from a local business man that a creamery be established in the historic village of Ballytore (Ballitore).
A prominent business man in South Kildare has drawn attention to the absence of creameries in the county – one of the best dairying counties in Ireland a generation ago – and pointed out that very little enterprise would be needed to make a start in this direction. The gentleman who has mooted the idea points out that the old derelict flour mills in Ballytore, the walls and outside buildings of which are in good condition, could be easily and cheaply transformed into a creamery, and there is an unfailing supply of water from the river Greise. The district around Ballytore is especially suited for the dairying industry, more so in fact than some districts in Munster where the industry is flourishing.
Rare accommodation is convenient and besides, Ballytore is on the main motor road from Dublin to Waterford, so that transit facilities are very favourable. The possibilities, therefore, are by no means in the region of theory, and a little initiative is the only thing necessary. Besides the old mill there is a considerable amount of waste ground in the locality which could be utilised for the building of workers’ dwellings which are very much needed even now, wholly apart from the question of organised industry. The suggestion is a very practical one and now that there is a likelihood of a general industrial revival the establishment of a creamery in Co. Kildare would be a business proposition of first-class importance. It is likely that the suggestion will materialise and that a preliminary meeting will be held in a few weeks.
