POSTCARDS OF NEWBRIDGE BARRACKS
POSTCARDS OF NEWBRIDGE BARRACKS
The development of the modern town of Newbridge was a direct consequence of the decision in the early 1800s to establish a British Army Cavalry Barracks there. Historian James Durney has previously written on the background to this decision: https://www.kildare.ie/library/ehistory/2012/08/newbridge_barracks_the_first_u.asp
Following the construction of the original barracks in 1819, further blocks were added in the following decades. The barracks dominated the town over the next century, although little evidence of them survives today apart from old walls and gateway on the Athgarvan Road and Cutlery Road. These are some historic postcards of these barracks from the early twentieth century.
