PRESENTATION OF D. C. M.
THE LEINSTER LEADER FEBRUARY 22, 1919
PRESENTATION OF D. C. M.
The inhabitants of North Walsham and district witnessed a very pleasing ceremony on Sunday morning week when Corporal James Delaney, of Ballytore, Co. Kildare, Leinster Regiment, who was awarded the D.C.M. on the 31st July, 1917, after Divine Service a square having been formed by military and amidst a vast concourse of people Brigadier General Turner pinned the medal on Delaney’s breast, commented on the high conception of duty and great initiative so important in non-commissioned officers exhibited by Corpl. Delaney. The medal was awarded for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while the company was held up at a strong point, and suffering heavy loss he collected a few men and attacked a concrete dug out which was causing most trouble. After several of his men had been hit, he took the survivors to a flank, and by means of a bombing attack down the trench, reached within a dozen yards of the dug out where he established a block, which he maintained in spite of having three men killed, and one wounded, until the dug out was captured from the other side. Corpl. Delaney who has been twice wounded, was the recipient of many congratulations after the ceremony.
