RESTORE ROUND TOWER

LEINSTER LEADER 2 AUGUST 1980

Restore Round Tower

Editor, Leinster Leader

Sir, On behalf of the Kildare Town Community Council and the Round Tower Restoration Committee, I would like to thank all those, who in such large numbers supported our inaugural fund raising lecture in Kildare Cathedral recently.

We are grateful to the Lecturer, Mr. Tadgh Hayden, and to Right Rev. Dr. Simms and Mr. Charles Shaller, American Embasy, who replied to the lecture. The support and presence of Very Rev. R. Prendergast P.P. V.F. representing Most Rev. Dr. Lennon, was very much appreciated. Most Rev. Dr. Caird also gave the support of his presence.

As a result of the magnificent support we received, we now are in a position to put the first stage of the task of restoring the Round Tower and opening it to the public in hand. Plans include the painting of the tower on the outside and the restoration of the original conical top. The restoration of the conical top will mean that the Round Tower in Kildare will be the highest Round Tower in Ireland.

M. Hughes, Hon Secretary,

2306 Maryville, Kildare town.
