The Leinster Leader and the Treaty
The Leinster Leader & The Treaty
The early hours of 6th December 1921 saw the signing of the Articles of Agreement for a Treaty between Great Britain and Ireland (widely known as ‘The Treaty’). Reaction and commentary on the historic agreement would take place across the island over the following weeks. County Kildare was no different, although issues such as the break-up of the workhouse system in the County, unemployment and stories of local interest dominated the local papers.
The Leinster Leader newspaper editorialised strongly in favour of the agreement, welcoming ‘A New Ireland Opening’, as early as 10th December. A transcript of the full editorial can be read here THE LEINSTER LEADER 10 December 1921
