Robert Brooke founded a Cotton Manufacturing enterprise in 1780 in Co. Kildare, some 240 years ago this year. The village of Prosperous owes its origin to his endeavours. The attempt failed badly and was abandoned within a short number of years. Brooke subsequently became Governor of St. Helena.
