{"id":1084,"date":"2013-06-22T09:40:28","date_gmt":"2013-06-22T09:40:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/54.229.91.100\/libraryandarts\/library\/ehistory\/?p=1084"},"modified":"2026-01-22T16:40:52","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T16:40:52","slug":"the-jogger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/ehistory\/the-jogger\/","title":{"rendered":"The Jogger, a\u00a0poem\u00a0by Joe Kennedy, Allenwood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The Jogger<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was asked to run for charity, by God said I, \u201cI WILL\u201d<br \/>\nSo they handed me this sponsor card and it I had to fill<br \/>\nI asked around the neighbourhood and of course the family<br \/>\nWould they throw in a few \u2018ould pound and help to sponsor me.<\/p>\n<p>I bought myself some trainers, a jersey and some togs.<br \/>\nAnd when I started jogging I was nearly ate by dogs.<br \/>\nThe neighbours were all laughing and calling me a clown<br \/>\nSo I just calmly told them, to put their money down.<\/p>\n<p>I ran every morning and the same thing every night<br \/>\nAnd after two weeks running it started coming right<br \/>\nI knew how I was feeling that I could do this race<br \/>\nIt was just a matter of timing, so I set myself a pace.<\/p>\n<p>The time it passed so quickly, t\u2019was the morning of the race<br \/>\nAnd when you hear of my mistake I stand now in disgrace<br \/>\nFor in my haste to run this race and cross the finish line<br \/>\nJust like the clown they called me I forgot to check the time<\/p>\n<p>So as I lay there sleeping the whole of Ireland ran<br \/>\nSure I mixed up the starting time, which was four AM<br \/>\nNow as for all your sponsorship if it\u2019s all right with you<br \/>\nI\u2019ll train a little harder and a marathon I\u2019ll do.<\/p>\n<p>No, I won\u2019t make the same mistake, no not a second time<br \/>\nAnd I guarantee each of you I\u2019ll cross the finish line<br \/>\nSo if you see me out there going for my jog<br \/>\nPlease do me a favour and bring in your bloody dog.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><em>&#8216;The Jogger,&#8217; a poem by Joe Kennedy, Allenwood.
