The owner, Mr. Archbold, has from the commencement of the Government’s activities in the growing of the crop, taken a very deep interest both in the cultivation of the plant and the re-handling of the leaf, and has expended a considerable amount in providing heating and drying apparatus and the erection of sheds. Employment was given at times to upwards of fifty hands, and the loss in wages to the workers will be heavy.
Coming so soon after the closing of the Ballitore Tannery, by which nearly twenty hands were left idle, the loss in the district will come as a very grave hardship. It is understood that the plant of the closed tannery has been purchased by the Irish Tanners, Limited, and is to be transferred to their branch at Ballitore, where they still continue to turn out large quantities of leather in their premises taken over from Mr. Patrick Cullen.

An article from the leinster Leader of 4 March 1939 on the closing of the tobacco factory in Ballitore.

An article from the leinster Leader of 4 March 1939 on the closing of the tobacco factory in Ballitore.

[29

post-1144","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-industrial-heritage
["GET
