{"id":1155,"date":"2013-10-10T13:06:41","date_gmt":"2013-10-10T13:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/54.229.91.100\/libraryandarts\/library\/ehistory\/?p=1155"},"modified":"2025-10-29T19:49:23","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T19:49:23","slug":"death-of-skurt-doyle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/ehistory\/death-of-skurt-doyle\/","title":{"rendered":"Death of Skurt Doyle, Athy, 1953"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Leinster Leader 27 July 1953<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Death of former athlete<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Mr. John (\u201cSkurt\u201d) Doyle,who died rather unexpectedly at his residence, Convent View, Athy, on Saturday, at the age of 70 years, served in the British Army during the 1914\/18 war, and was taken prisoner by the Germans. At the end of the war he was repatriated.<br \/>\nAn all-round sportsman and athlete, he excelled at Gaelic, Rugby and Soccer football and at hockey. He belonged to Athy G.F.C. for some years and played on the Co. Kildare senior team. He distinguished himself at Rugby and hockey for the Athy clubs, and won his place on the Leinster junior interprovincial Rugby side. In the British Army he was an outstanding Soccer player and long distance runner.<br \/>\nFor a time he was employed in the road transport section of C.I.E., and for the past few years acted as caretaker of Athy C.Y.M.S. Hall.<br \/>\nAt his funeral to St. Michael\u2019s Cemetery, Athy, on Saturday, every sports club in the district was represented.
