Healy, 44 North Circular Road (Phoenix Park), Dublin, writes: Your article on the present day development of racing at Naas sent me hunting to try to find out when first racing was promoted at Naas.\u00a0 In so far as I could trace, the first officially recorded Naas racing meeting was held in 1827.\u00a0 It was of four days\u2019 duration: Monday, May 28, Tuesday, May 29; Wednesday, May 30 and Friday, June 1.\u00a0 The races were the following :<\/p>\n<p>Warbler and Hunters\u2019 Sweepstakes of \u00a33 (play or pay) with \u00a350 added; two miles, run in heats. Mr. T. Shields\u2019 four-year-old by Milesius won both heats.<\/p>\n<p>Sweepstakes of \u00a32 each with \u00a325 added.\u00a0 \u201cfor hunters, race horses admitted\u201d; \u00a0two mile heats.\u00a0 Mr Saidwell\u2019s aged mare Mary Ann won both heats.<\/p>\n<p>Sweepstakes of \u00a35 each (play or pay) with \u00a340 added \u201c for hunters that never started for a Racing Plate or Stakes\u201d; three mile heats, Mr. J. Fitzpatrick\u2019s six-year-old gelding Cockahoop (by Cockahoop) was unplaced in the first heat, but won second and third heats and received the stakes.<\/p>\n<p>And on the last day of the meeting the races were these:<\/p>\n<p>The Ladies\u2019 Purse \u201cfor the beaten horses of the week\u201d; two mile heats. Mr Caldwell\u2019s three-year-old filly Trawneen won both heats.<\/p>\n<p>Sweepstakes of \u00a31 each, to which the Stewards added \u00a310, \u201cfor horses the property of Subscribers, not thoroughbread\u201d; two mile heats.\u00a0 Mr Byrne\u2019s aged horse (un-named) won both heats.<\/p>\n<p>Challenge of the Warbler Stakes \u00a315 each; two miles \u2013 Mr. Sheilds\u2019 ch c by Milesius, 11 -10, 1; Mr. Dunne\u2019s b g, 12-10, 2.<\/p>\n<p>These particulars are found in \u201cRacing Calender\u201d (vol.38) for 1827.\u00a0 Someone amongst your senior readers may have heard where was the site of this old-time racecourse.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leinster Leader 4 December 1954 First Race Meeting in Naas held in 1827 Mr. Thomas E.
