WILLIAM  BRODERICK, LUGHILL,  MONASTEREVAN, 1942"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><i>THE\u00a0 LEINSTER\u00a0 LEADER<\/i><\/b><b>\u00a0 14 NOVEMBER\u00a0 1942<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Profound\u00a0 regret\u00a0 was\u00a0 expressed\u00a0 in Monasterevan\u00a0 and\u00a0 surrounding\u00a0 districts\u00a0 on\u00a0 Monday,\u00a0 November\u00a0 2nd,\u00a0 1942, at an\u00a0 advanced\u00a0 age,\u00a0 at his\u00a0 residence,\u00a0 Lughill,\u00a0 of Mr. William\u00a0 Broderick.<\/p>\n<p>His\u00a0 death,\u00a0 though\u00a0 not\u00a0 entirely\u00a0 unexpected,\u00a0 he\u00a0 having\u00a0 never\u00a0 fully recovered\u00a0 from\u00a0 a\u00a0 severe\u00a0 illness\u00a0 over\u00a0 eighteen\u00a0 months\u00a0 ago,\u00a0 was\u00a0 a\u00a0 great\u00a0 shock\u00a0 to\u00a0 his\u00a0 sorrowing\u00a0 family.\u00a0 He\u00a0 was\u00a0 possessed\u00a0 of\u00a0 an\u00a0 amiable\u00a0 personality,\u00a0 quiet\u00a0 and\u00a0 assuming,\u00a0 and\u00a0 had a kind and hospitable disposition;\u00a0 the\u00a0 poor\u00a0 and\u00a0 needy\u00a0 always\u00a0 found\u00a0 in him\u00a0 a\u00a0 willing\u00a0 and\u00a0 generous\u00a0 helper.<\/p>\n<p>An \u00a0exemplary\u00a0 Catholic,\u00a0 devoted\u00a0 to\u00a0 his family,\u00a0 he passed away peacefully, fortified\u00a0 by the rites\u00a0 of\u00a0 Holy\u00a0 Church. The deceased belonged to the farming\u00a0 community\u00a0 and\u00a0 was\u00a0 a\u00a0 keen\u00a0 farmer.\u00a0\u00a0 He\u00a0 was\u00a0 a\u00a0 staunch\u00a0 Nationalist\u00a0 form\u00a0 his\u00a0 early\u00a0 years\u00a0 and ,\u00a0 took\u00a0 a prominent\u00a0 part\u00a0 in\u00a0 every\u00a0 National\u00a0 movement\u00a0 since\u00a0 the\u00a0 70\u2019s\u00a0 of\u00a0 last\u00a0 century ,\u00a0 which\u00a0 had\u00a0 for\u00a0 its\u00a0 object the securing\u00a0 of\u00a0 justice\u00a0 and\u00a0 fair\u00a0 treatment\u00a0 for\u00a0 Irishmen,\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 freedom\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 country.\u00a0 He\u00a0 took\u00a0 an\u00a0 active\u00a0 part\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 struggle\u00a0 for\u00a0 the \u00a0land,\u00a0 was\u00a0 a\u00a0 keen\u00a0 supporters\u00a0 of\u00a0 Parnell,\u00a0 became one\u00a0 of\u00a0 the first\u00a0 supporters\u00a0 of the Sinn Fein\u00a0 movement\u00a0 in\u00a0 the district, was an ardent supporter\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Irish\u00a0 Volunteers\u00a0 and\u00a0 helped\u00a0 the\u00a0 Old\u00a0 I.R.A.\u00a0 in the fight for\u00a0 freedom.\u00a0 His\u00a0 house\u00a0 was constantly\u00a0 availed\u00a0 of as\u00a0 a\u00a0 refuge\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0 members\u00a0 of that\u00a0 party\u00a0 during\u00a0 these\u00a0 troubled\u00a0 times.\u00a0 He\u00a0 opposed the Treaty\u00a0 and\u00a0 aided\u00a0 the\u00a0 Republican\u00a0 minority\u00a0 during\u00a0 Civil\u00a0 War,\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0 principles\u00a0 of\u00a0 which\u00a0 he\u00a0 upheld\u00a0 until\u00a0 the\u00a0 time\u00a0 of\u00a0 his\u00a0 death.\u00a0 He was a\u00a0 member\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 old\u00a0 Athy\u00a0 District\u00a0 Council.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 remains\u00a0 were\u00a0 removed\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 Church\u00a0 of\u00a0 Our\u00a0 Lady\u00a0 of Victories, Kildangan,\u00a0\u00a0 on\u00a0 Tuesday\u00a0\u00a0 evening Requiem\u00a0 Office\u00a0 was\u00a0 chanted and Mass offered\u00a0 for\u00a0 the eternal\u00a0 repose\u00a0 of\u00a0 his\u00a0 soul\u00a0 on\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 following\u00a0 day.\u00a0\u00a0 The celebrant of the Mass\u00a0 was\u00a0 Rev.\u00a0 W. Mahon, \u00a0\u00a0C.C.,\u00a0\u00a0 Monasterevan.\u00a0\u00a0 Very Rev.\u00a0 F.\u00a0 Brophy,\u00a0 P.P.,\u00a0 Suncroft,\u00a0 presided.\u00a0\u00a0 The Chanters were:\u00a0 Very Rev. P.\u00a0 Gorry, P.P.,\u00a0\u00a0 Monasterevan,\u00a0 and\u00a0 Rev.\u00a0 T.\u00a0 N.\u00a0 Cunningham, C.C.,\u00a0 Nurney. In\u00a0 the\u00a0 choir\u00a0 were:\u00a0 Rev.\u00a0 J.\u00a0 Gorman, C.C.,\u00a0 Suncroft;\u00a0 Rev.\u00a0 T.\u00a0 Kennedy, C.C.,\u00a0 Kildare;\u00a0 Rev.\u00a0 W. Jones, Kildare; Rev.\u00a0 W.\u00a0 Tyndall,\u00a0 O.Carm.,\u00a0 Prior,\u00a0 White\u00a0 Abbey,\u00a0 Kildare,\u00a0 and\u00a0 Rev.\u00a0 M.\u00a0 Murray, C.C.,\u00a0 Lugacurran.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently\u00a0\u00a0 the funeral took place to the family burial ground at Harristown.\u00a0\u00a0At the graveside the last prayers were recited by Rev.\u00a0 T.\u00a0 N.\u00a0 Cunningham, C.C.,\u00a0 Nurney.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 funeral,\u00a0\u00a0 as\u00a0\u00a0 on\u00a0\u00a0 Wednesday\u00a0 evening,\u00a0 was\u00a0\u00a0 large\u00a0\u00a0 and\u00a0 representative,\u00a0\u00a0 and\u00a0 testified\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 esteem\u00a0 in\u00a0 which\u00a0 deceased\u00a0 was\u00a0 held.\u00a0\u00a0 The chief mourners were:\u00a0\u00a0 Messrs.\u00a0 William Patrick, and John (sons); Mrs.\u00a0 W.M. Murray, Sister M.\u00a0 Ann, and the Misses Maggie, Kitty, Bridie and Lil (daughters);\u00a0\u00a0 Mr.\u00a0 William Murray, Derry-mahon (son-in-law);\u00a0 Mrs.\u00a0 B.\u00a0 Brennan (sister); Messrs.\u00a0 Patrick\u00a0 William and James\u00a0 Brennan,\u00a0 Walter\u00a0 and\u00a0 Thomas\u00a0 Broderick,\u00a0\u00a0 William\u00a0 and\u00a0 John\u00a0 Sullivan (nephews) ;\u00a0 Mrs.\u00a0 B. Walsh (sister)-in-law.
