{"id":2013,"date":"2014-12-13T14:03:10","date_gmt":"2014-12-13T14:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kildare.ie\/ehistory\/?p=2013"},"modified":"2025-10-29T18:05:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T18:05:16","slug":"what-does-your-curragh-mean-to-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/ehistory\/what-does-your-curragh-mean-to-you\/","title":{"rendered":"WHAT DOES YOUR CURRAGH MEAN TO YOU?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><strong>What does <i>your<\/i> Curragh mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">A place where I&#8217;m happy<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">see friends and learn things<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">there&#8217;s the army and sheep<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">and historic rings.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Prickly furze bushes<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">evergreens and blackberries,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">wild wax-cap mushrooms,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">the old cemetery.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Oak, chestnut and beech,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">birch, cherry blossom<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Playing conkers with friends<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">at St. Leger&#8217;s Bottoms.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Winter red robins<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">owls, kingfishers, pigeons<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">magpies and skylarks,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">lapwings and chickens.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Sheep, rabbits, hares,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">squirrels, grey and red<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">A hedgehog run over<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">by a car and was dead!<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Foxes, deer, cows<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">badgers and frogs<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">tadpoles and cats<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">and of course, horses and dogs.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Spacious for sports<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">for a walk with your pet<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">or rugby and soccer<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">explore where you&#8217;re let.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Of our army we&#8217;re proud<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">for they serve or country<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">but there&#8217;s work to be had<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">on the golf course so lovely.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">In Centra, the post office<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">or as a fit fire-fighter<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">a teacher or jockey<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">paramedic or writer.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Oh what of the tales<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">that are long handed-down,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">of Stonehenge standing here<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">or a lake underground.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Fionn, Bran and Sceolan<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">who used to play here,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">guard the plains at Ballymany<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">for all to hold dear.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">A greedy man owned<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">all this plain for himself,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&#8217;till St. Brigid cured him<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">and her Cloak spread itself.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">It covered the plain<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">life, land and water,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">to be known forever<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">as St. Brigid&#8217;s Pastures.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">There&#8217;s the boxer Dan Donnelly<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">who down in the Hollow<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">beat Cooper from England<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">to become a great hero.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">His arm was preserved<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">in Kilcullen for years<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">and now travels the world<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">for the Irish to cheer.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">A Massacre here<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">on the Plains of Kildare<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">at the old Gibbet Rath<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">in the bold ninety-eight.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">The Redcoats did charge<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">the unarmed rebels down<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">there were eighty-five widows<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">in old Kildare Town.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&#8220;Is there?&#8221; they asked us<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&#8220;anything you would change?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&#8216;Well they ought to do more<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">to clean up the place.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">The sheep poo&#8217;s annoying<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">everywhere to be found,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">we&#8217;d like nets on the goalposts<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">and a better playground.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Stop the sheep in the gardens<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">and corral them with fences<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">No more evictions<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">let&#8217;s come to our senses.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Should a tourist enquire<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&#8220;What route should I follow?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">There&#8217;s the Military Graveyard<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">And Dan Donnelly&#8217;s Hollow.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">*<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">One of the biggest green-grassy<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">plains in the world<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">it has the Army museum<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">full of old army stuff.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">There&#8217;s the Racecourse and races<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">and trains crossing there<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">while Christy Moore sings<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&#8216;The Curragh of Kildare.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Scoil Naomh Padraig, the Curragh 5th and 6th Class, December 2014, with Mario Corrigan, Celine Broughal, Margaret Riordan and Claire Connelly,\u00a0Kildare Library and Arts Services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does your Curragh mean to you? \u00a0 A place where I&#8217;m happy see friends and learn things there&#8217;s the army and sheep and historic rings. * Prickly furze bushes evergreens and blackberries, wild wax-cap mushrooms, the old cemetery.
