GOING TO BETHLEHEM<\/strong><\/p>\n

A carol<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lo! Two weary travellers,<\/p>\n

From Nazareth they come;<\/p>\n

Joseph and Mary, sweet and fair;<\/p>\n

Leaving their own dear home,<\/p>\n

In wintry weather, cold and chill,<\/p>\n

Obedient to their Father\u2019s Will.<\/p>\n

Over the hills to Bethlehem,<\/p>\n

In the dark and stormy night,<\/p>\n

They find the Inn door closed to them,<\/p>\n

No shelter in their plight-<\/p>\n

No place to sleep-or kindly voice<\/p>\n

To bid them welcome, and rejoice.<\/p>\n

With patient steps they wander round,<\/p>\n

Seeking a refuge near,<\/p>\n

A ruined stable mid the rocks<\/p>\n

\u2018Twas all the shelter there<\/p>\n

With a clumsy crib and manger,<\/p>\n

An ox and ass rode bound.<\/p>\n

So comfortless-so cold-so bare!<\/p>\n

On scanty straw for bed;<\/p>\n

Pure Mary laid her Baby dear,<\/p>\n

No pillow for His head;<\/p>\n

Swathed in garments poor and thin,<\/p>\n

While cruel breezes blew within.<\/p>\n

The Lord of Life and Heaven,<\/p>\n

Willed it thus to be;<\/p>\n

No friend on Earth to welcome Him,<\/p>\n

He chose sad poverty.<\/p>\n

With Mary and good Joseph,<\/p>\n

In sweet humility.<\/p>\n

Then was heard soft music,<\/p>\n

Descending from the skies<\/p>\n

The wondering Shepherds left their flocks,<\/p>\n

To lift their reverent eyes!<\/p>\n

A glorious band of Angels bright<\/p>\n

Hail this Holy Christmas night.<\/p>\n

In heavenly harmonies they sing<\/p>\n

Such songs were never heard again<\/p>\n

\u201cGlory to God on High, Our King,<\/p>\n

\u201cTo men on Earth, good news we bring.\u201d<\/p>\n

An Infant Saviour born to-day<\/p>\n

In a manger laid away.<\/p>\n

Forth went the simple shepherds,<\/p>\n

To worship and adore,<\/p>\n

In haste and wonder do they run,<\/p>\n

And open the stable door;<\/p>\n

There behold the Child of Mary,<\/p>\n

The new born Saviour whom she bore.<\/p>\n

The heavens declare His glory,<\/p>\n

With marvellous, flaming Star-<\/p>\n

Which led the eager Wisemen<\/p>\n

From Eastern lands afar,<\/p>\n

In living faith-with treasures rare,<\/p>\n

They bow the Knee-and worship there.<\/p>\n

We, too, will go to Bethlehem,<\/p>\n

With joy and grateful love;<\/p>\n

Like incense be our praises<\/p>\n

To our Father-God above;<\/p>\n

Because He sent His own dear Son,<\/p>\n

Who glory did resign<\/p>\n

To be the Son of Mary dear,<\/p>\n
