DROVE JARVEY IN EARLY CENTURY<\/b><\/p>\n
ONE OF THE last surviving old-time jarveys in the Curragh-Newbridge area, Mr. Christopher (\u201cKit\u201d) Mullally, died at the week-end.<\/p>\n
Aged 83 and native of Athgarvan, \u201cKit\u201d as he was widely and affectionately known, drove a jaunting-car which plied throughout the Newbridge-Curragh area in the twenties and early thirties.\u00a0 A fine athlete as a young man, he was keenly interested in G.A.A. affairs, greyhounds and horse racing.\u00a0 He spent a number of years as assistant to Paddy Kelly, Dublin, the well-known greyhound trainer; he was especially interested in G.A.A. affairs, greyhounds and never missed the annual meetings of the Newbridge and Old Kilcullen clubs.<\/p>\n
He played a lot of football with Athgarvan club, of which he was\u00a0 generally regarded as the father figure (members of the club formed a guard of honour at funeral); he also trained the County team for a period.<\/p>\n
Active up to a comparatively short time prior to his death (in NaasHospital), he farmed a small holding at Athgarvan and grazed a number of sheep on the Curragh.\u00a0 He was a very popular figure, particularly among the farming and sporting fraternity and this was evidenced by the very large attendance at the funeral to St. Conleth\u2019s Cemetery on Sunday He had lived with his nephew Mr. Seamus Doyle, Athgarvan, for the past 12 years, and is survived by his sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Doyle, Athgarvan; Mrs. Margaret O\u2019Connor, Dublin, nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n
