{"id":2081,"date":"2015-01-24T09:59:55","date_gmt":"2015-01-24T09:59:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kildare.ie\/ehistory\/?p=2081"},"modified":"2025-10-29T11:51:52","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T11:51:52","slug":"john-omahony-best-naval-recruit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/ehistory\/john-omahony-best-naval-recruit\/","title":{"rendered":"JOHN O&#8217;MAHONY BEST NAVAL RECRUIT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><i>LEINSTER\u00a0 LEADER<\/i> 31 MARCH 1962<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Best Recruit In Naval Company<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Seaman Recruit,\u00a0 John O\u2019Mahony, a former member of the typographical staff of the <i>Leinster Leader<\/i>, who was recently selected honour man of his company at the Recruit Graduation Review at the U.S. Naval training centre at Great Lakes, Illinois.\u00a0 After his apprenticeship in the <i>Leader <\/i>he joined the <i>Kerryman<\/i>, from which he emigrated to America some years ago.\u00a0 By now &#8211; he got 14 days leave following the graduation &#8211; he is a member of the Navy\u2019s Operating Forces.\u00a0 The award was presented to him at the training centre, about 20 miles north of Chicago by Lt. Gen. Emerson L.
