{"id":2109,"date":"2015-02-06T16:36:59","date_gmt":"2015-02-06T16:36:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kildare.ie\/ehistory\/?p=2109"},"modified":"2015-02-06T16:36:59","modified_gmt":"2015-02-06T16:36:59","slug":"death-of-a-naas-soldier-at-the-curragh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/ehistory\/death-of-a-naas-soldier-at-the-curragh\/","title":{"rendered":"DEATH OF A NAAS SOLDIER AT THE CURRAGH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>THE LEINSTER LEADER<\/em> 10 October 1914<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>DEATH OF A NAAS SOLDIER AT THE<\/strong> <strong>CURRAGH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The death took place at\u00a0 the\u00a0 Military Hospital,\u00a0 Curragh on Saturday\u00a0 last\u00a0 of Private\u00a0\u00a0McGarr,\u00a0C.\u00a0 Company, 7th Service Battalion\u00a0 R.D.F., after a short illness.\u00a0\u00a0 The deceased\u00a0 was a\u00a0 native of Naas, but\u00a0 for\u00a0 the\u00a0 last\u00a0 three years\u00a0 he resides\u00a0 in Scotland.\u00a0\u00a0He was employed for a number of years by Baron de Robeck.\u00a0\u00a0From Scotland he joined the army\u00a0 in\u00a0 response to\u00a0 Lord\u00a0\u00a0Kitchener\u2019s\u00a0 appeal,\u00a0\u00a0about\u00a0 the\u00a0 1st September last,\u00a0 and arrived\u00a0 in Naas Depot\u00a0 about the 5th September last.\u00a0\u00a0He was drafted\u00a0 to the Curragh on the 7th, where he enjoyed the best of health up\u00a0 to\u00a0 the Monday prior\u00a0 to\u00a0 his death.\u00a0When the dread\u00a0 disease,\u00a0 pneumonia,\u00a0 claimed\u00a0 another victim.\u00a0\u00a0He was attended in his last\u00a0 illness\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0 Roman Catholic Chaplain to the Forces.\u00a0\u00a0He\u00a0 was a great favourite with\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0 Major\u00a0 and\u00a0 officers of his company, who\u00a0 tender\u00a0to\u00a0his relatives\u00a0 their deepest\u00a0 sympathy.\u00a0\u00a0The funeral\u00a0 took \u00a0place\u00a0 on Monday\u00a0 morning by\u00a0 road,\u00a0 to\u00a0 Naas Cemetery.
