{"id":2242,"date":"2015-04-11T11:05:15","date_gmt":"2015-04-11T11:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kildare.ie\/ehistory\/?p=2242"},"modified":"2015-04-11T11:05:15","modified_gmt":"2015-04-11T11:05:15","slug":"select-body-of-okelly-writings-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/ehistory\/select-body-of-okelly-writings-out\/","title":{"rendered":"SELECT BODY OF O&#8217;KELLY WRITINGS OUT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Leinster Leader<\/em> 17 January 1970<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Select body of O\u2019Kelly writings out<\/b><\/p>\n<p>FOR the first time a select body of the writings of Seamus O\u2019Kelly are available in one volume.<\/p>\n<p>Published on 5th December by Gill and Macmillan under the title <em>A Land of Loneliness<\/em> this work, which was selected and edited with a critical introduction by Eamonn Grennan, an Irish man completing doctoral studies at Harvard University includes works which are worthy of preservation by any standards.<\/p>\n<p>One such work,<em> The Weavers Grave,<\/em> is regarded throughout the world as a masterpiece. It is the best known and most translated and broadcast of O\u2019Kelly\u2019s works.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Loughrea\u00a0 Co Galway Seamus O\u2019Kelly started life as journalist on the Connacht Leader In 1904 he became the youngest editor in Ireland when he took over <em>The Southern Star<\/em>, and in the following years he became editor of <em>Leinster Leader<\/em>; the <em>Saturday Evening Post<\/em>; the <em>Sunday Freeman<\/em> and <em>Nationality<\/em>. As well as being a journalist O\u2019Kelly was also a poet, playwright, novelist and short-story writer. In fact he was a master of the short story form, a fact which is acknowledged by writers and scholars everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Now, just over fifty years after his death Seamus O\u2019Kelly is receiving deservedly so greater eminence then he received in his life-time or in the half century since his passing.
