{"id":2496,"date":"2015-11-21T12:17:25","date_gmt":"2015-11-21T12:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kildare.ie\/ehistory\/?p=2496"},"modified":"2025-10-29T18:03:25","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T18:03:25","slug":"storming-of-the-dardanelles-by-thomas-doran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/ehistory\/storming-of-the-dardanelles-by-thomas-doran\/","title":{"rendered":"STORMING OF THE DARDANELLES BY THOMAS DORAN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>STORMING OF THE DARDANELLES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We talk of Irish regiments, no wonder why we do,<\/p>\n<p>The Dublins and the Munsters, you\u2019ve heard about those two;<\/p>\n<p>You can see by many papers how Irish blood it tells<\/p>\n<p>The way those famous regiments fought at the Dardanelles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the 25th of April, when we did make a start,<\/p>\n<p>We were singing Tipperary, a song that reached our hearts;<\/p>\n<p>The ships were packed with khaki lads, such spirits they did show<\/p>\n<p>To the cry Are we downhearted? We quickly answered No.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We got then into our small boats, this way we were to land,<\/p>\n<p>Then every Tommy could be seen with a woodbine in his hand,<\/p>\n<p>There were boys from Tipperary, from Cork and County Clare,<\/p>\n<p>And the boys from County Dublin and the Short Grass, that\u2019s Kildare.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Turks they were prepared for us, as one and all could tell,<\/p>\n<p>For about one thousand yards from land we were met with shot and shell;<\/p>\n<p>There were bodies floating through the sea and hundreds on the sand,<\/p>\n<p>But the Turks they suffered terribly when we fought them on the land.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The wounded moaning mercy, it was an awful sight;<\/p>\n<p>Those who got badly wounded were wishing for the night,<\/p>\n<p>And when night came our stretcher boys had lots of work to start,<\/p>\n<p>Collecting bodies, legs and arms, the sight near broke their heart.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Turks were then retreating, their numbers lost were large;<\/p>\n<p>Our officers say Dublins! We\u2019ll have a bayonet charge.<\/p>\n<p>The charge was done, the Turks they run, our lads in ringing cheers,<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t forget those Irish boys \u2013 the Dublin Fusilliers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before\u00a0I go,\u00a0I tell you, be proud and give three cheers.<\/p>\n<p>For those brave fighting Irishmen \u2013 the Dublin Fusilliers.<\/p>\n<p>Pte. Thomas Doran, 1st Battn., RDF.<\/p>\n<p>Private Thomas Doran, the Harbour, Naas, was wounded in the Dardanelles while serving with 1st Battn. RDF.
