{"id":3368,"date":"2017-11-01T14:06:33","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T14:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kildare.ie\/ehistory\/?p=3368"},"modified":"2017-11-01T14:06:33","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T14:06:33","slug":"memories-of-the-picture-palace-athy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/ehistory\/memories-of-the-picture-palace-athy\/","title":{"rendered":"MEMORIES OF THE PICTURE PALACE, ATHY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Memories of The Picture Palace, Athy <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>by Frank O\u2019Brien, 3 September 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I remember there was a charity showing of \u201cSong of my Heart\u201d starring John McCormack and Maureen O\u2019Sullivan at the Picture Palace, Offaly Street, Athy.\u00a0 Young folks hadn\u2019t a hope of getting a ticket.\u00a0 The Picture Palace was an old malt house which Captain Hoize made into a cinema in 1926.\u00a0 There were 3 compartments \u2013 2d into the pit, 4d into the parterre and 8d into the gallery.\u00a0 I forget the year of the big night.\u00a0 The street outside was packed.\u00a0 We got a window sill and had a great view.\u00a0 Lady Weldon of Kilromoney who was a great whistler and always did\u00a0MC at the charity events in Athy at that time.\u00a0 Of course she did\u00a0MC that night and was a great hostess. We got to see the picture afterwards.
