BRIGID.<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Oh, she was fair as a lily,<br \/>And holy as she was fair,<br \/>The Virgin Mary of Erin,<br \/>Brigid of green Kildare;<br \/>She came to earth when the snowdrops<br \/>Were starring the rain-drenched sod,<br \/>The sweetest blossom among them<br \/>From the far-off gardens of God.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">And over the haunted mountains<br \/>Where Druids still watch and pray<br \/>A dawn-wind wakened and whispered:<br \/>&ldquo;Give praise to the Lord today,<br \/>For to you a child is given<br \/>Whose name in the days to be,<br \/>Will flame like a torch eternal<br \/>From uttermost sea to sea,<br \/>And her life, like a surge of incense<br \/>From the alter of your green sod,<br \/>Will fashion a stair forever<br \/>From Ireland up to God.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">O Brigid, so high and holy!<br \/>So strong in womanly grace,<br \/>Look down from the sills of Heaven<br \/>Today on your olden race.<br \/>&lsquo;Tis over the world we&rsquo;re scattered,<br \/>And your land is a land of woe,<br \/>But we&rsquo;re holding you as a lodestar<br \/>Whatever the roads we know.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">For you are our pledge in Heaven,<br \/>With Phadrig and Columcille,<br \/>For the faith of our foes unbroken<br \/>And the hopes that they could not still;<br \/>For the surge of our prayers unceasing,<br \/>For the depth of our love unpriced.<br \/>For our agony in earth&rsquo;s garden<br \/>And our crucifixion with Christ.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">And we cry to you, holy Brigid,<br \/>&lsquo;Tis you have the right to pray<br \/>For us and the land of Erin<br \/>In the hour of our need today.<br \/>We breathe your name as a symbol,<br \/>Like the lamp on your alter set,<br \/>That God is an unforgetting God<br \/>And will stand for our righting yet;<br \/>Yea, He, who so long has tried us<br \/>In the flame of His purging fire,<br \/>Will give to the race of Brigid yet<br \/>The crown of their soul&rsquo;s desire.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">THERESA BRAYTON.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Two poems dedicated to St. Brigid, from Paddy McCormack (Kildare Town) and Theresa Brayton (of &#8216;The Old Bog Road,&#8217; fame).
