NORTH KILDARE<\/strong> Area, \u201cMissing Friends\u201d Notices <\/strong><\/p>\n in The Boston Pilot<\/em> Newspaper, 1831-1865<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong>The Pilot is the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Boston and claims the title of \u201cAmerica\u2019s Oldest Catholic Newspaper\u201d having been founded in 1829 under a different title by Bishop Benedict Joseph Fenwick, at a time of increased Irish immigration to the United States and rising anti-Catholic feeling towards the newcomer\u2019s church. In 1834 Bishop Fenwick sold the publication to two laymen \u2013 Henry Devereux and Patrick Donahoe. During much of the 19th<\/sup> Century the Boston Pilot acquired the reputation of being an Irish \u2013 American Cultural Newspaper. Donahoe had changed the title of the Newspaper from \u201cThe Jesuit, the Literary and Catholic Sentinel\u201d to \u201cThe Boston Pilot\u201d in 1836 in tribute to \u201cThe Pilot\u201d which was the newspaper of Daniel O\u2019Connell\u2019s Repeal movement.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Between 1831 and 1916 some 45,000 \u201cMissing Friends\u201d advertisements were placed in the Newspaper by friends and relatives in attempts to locate loved ones lost during emigration. These Notices were not cheap costing the price of a daily wage and more ($1) for an ad that would run three times.<\/p>\n Details for the Notices may have been \u201clost in translation\u201d between the person giving them and the Newspaper Clerks receiving them. This accounts for variations in the spellings of surnames, places and the variations of \u201cRathcoffey\u201d and other areas.<\/p>\n OF EDWARD CAFFERY, a native of Clane, County Kildare Ireland; when last heard of he was in Fall River Mass.
