Historian James Durney has previously written on the background to this decision: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kildare.ie\/library\/ehistory\/2012\/08\/newbridge_barracks_the_first_u.asp\">https:\/\/www.kildare.ie\/library\/ehistory\/2012\/08\/newbridge_barracks_the_first_u.asp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Following the construction of the original barracks in 1819, further blocks were added in the following decades. The barracks dominated the town over the next century, although little evidence of them survives today apart from old walls and gateway on the Athgarvan Road and Cutlery Road.
