{"id":473,"date":"2009-09-26T16:14:27","date_gmt":"2009-09-26T16:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/54.229.91.100\/libraryandarts\/library\/ehistory\/?p=473"},"modified":"2009-09-26T16:14:27","modified_gmt":"2009-09-26T16:14:27","slug":"robbers-gulch-is-no-more-thanks-to-kildare-county-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/ehistory\/robbers-gulch-is-no-more-thanks-to-kildare-county-council\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;ROBBERS&#8217; GULCH&#8221; IS NO MORE THANKS TO KILDARE COUNTY COUNCIL."},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<div><em>Leinster<\/em><em> Leader 6th August 1977<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><strong>\u201cRobbers\u2019 Gulch\u201d <\/strong><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><strong>is no more<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There was a time when people called\u00a0it \u201cRobbers\u2019 Gulch\u201d, a stretch some couple of hundred yards long at Mullaghmast on the Athy-Ballitore road.\u00a0It was cut through a hill, the bank rose high on either side, and there was scarcely enough width for two large vehicles to pass each other safely.<\/div>\n<div>It was an ideal stretch for a hold-up, and in the early days of the State bandits used it for that purpose.\u00a0It was there that they held up the car conveying bank officials from Athy to Ballitore sub-office and robbed them.\u00a0No longer is it a narrow, forbidding stretch.\u00a0At a cost of about \u00a330,000, Kildare Co.
