{"id":5128,"date":"2022-09-29T15:05:15","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T15:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kildare.ie\/ehistory\/?p=5128"},"modified":"2025-09-24T15:26:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T14:26:07","slug":"the-trial-of-john-devoy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kildarelibraries.ie\/ehistory\/the-trial-of-john-devoy\/","title":{"rendered":"THE TRIAL OF JOHN DEVOY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Trial of John Devoy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On 24 September the Friends of John Devoy staged their annual event to commemorate the birth (3 September 1842) and death (28 September 1928) of the republican giant, John Devoy. \u2018The Trial of John Devoy\u2019 took place in the Courtroom, at Lawlor\u2019s Hotel, Naas.<\/p>\n<p>In front of a crowd of onlookers \u2018John Devoy\u2019 was arrested at the bar of the hotel by the Dublin Metropolitan Police. He was escorted by two armed Redcoats upstairs to the courtroom. Devoy\u2019s trial, and that of four of his Fenian comrades, took place in the packed courtroom. Relatives and members of the public looked on as John Devoy stood defiant in the dock. The trial was a forgone conclusion \u2013 all the defendants were found guilty of treason and sentenced to long terms in prison. As John Devoy and his comrades were led away in handcuffs his girlfriend, Eliza Kenny, sobbed, while his mother, Elizabet, lamented on John\u2019s trials and tribulations in his quest for Ireland\u2019s freedom from Britain.<\/p>\n<p>The trial was re-enacted by members of the Kill Music and Drama Group, and the Prosperous and Allen Drama Groups, along with Lord Edward\u2019s Own Re-enactment Group, Monasterevin. The commemorative event was sponsored by the Co.
