What does a County Archivist do?<\/u><\/strong><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">\u00a0Cecile Chemin, Regional Archivist<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Archives are generally described as the <strong>accumulated unique records of an individual or institution that warrant permanent preservation<\/strong> because of their value to their creator (Local Government) for their legal, administrative or fiscal purposes or to researchers because of their potential research value.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><u>Why are archives so important?<\/u><\/strong><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Archives are the raw material of history: they are primary sources<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Invaluable tools for the historian<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\">They are a sign of transparency: local government\u2019s archives<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\">They are a right: notion of public and cultural ownership<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\">They are an irreplaceable heritage, making up the history of the population at a local and national level.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\">Archives confer an identity to individuals and groups. Together they are the common inheritance of all humanity.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong><u>What harms archives?<\/u><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Archival material is fragile and may deteriorate easily. It has specific requirements and needs to be securely stored and maintained under proper conditions and listed for easy retrieval.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Every format has its own environmental requirements:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Parchment<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Photographs<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0 <\/span>Slides<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Maps, plans and drawings<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Audio and visual material<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Electronic formats<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Microfilms<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>Archives should be preserved against:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Light (UV radiation, heat gain)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Fire, or even smoke<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>High humidity (higher than 60%)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>Pollution<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font: 7pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0<\/span>High temperature (higher than 20\u00b0)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\">Dust<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36pt; text-indent: -18pt;\">Handling<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong><u>What does a county archivist do?<\/u><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><u>We ensure that, through our work, that the records of today are preserved for future generations.
