Some of these bodies encompass the earliest extant materials in a local authority archive, and include grand juries, poor law unions, rural district councils, boards of health and public assistance, as well as Town Commissioners, Town Councils and Urban District Councils.<\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: black;\">The <strong>Grand Juries were set up across the country from ca. 17<sup>th<\/sup> century,<\/strong> and were an early form of local government. <strong>Grand Jurors<\/strong>, who were appointed by the Sheriff, were most of the time, well-known local landowners.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: black;\">They were initially concerned with the administration of justice. However, their role gradually expanded to include the provision of roads, and bridges, and the maintenance of dispensaries, county infirmaries, lunatic asylums, courthouses and goals.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: black;\">The Grand Jury was <strong>empowered to levy a tax in the country<\/strong> (local Cess: tax or rate) and met at Spring and Summer assizes where presentments (works) were passed.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: black;\"><strong>Corrupt practices<\/strong> among grand juries were widespread in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century and the office of the <strong>county surveyor in 1817<\/strong> brought back some degree of control into the order of making presentments. <\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: black;\">The County Council superseded Grand Juries in 1898, thereby introducing democratically elected county and city representatives for the first time.<\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><strong><span style=\"color: black;\">What do we have in Kildare Local Authority Archive?<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: black;\">The main surviving series from the Grand Juries are <strong>presentment books<\/strong>, treasurers query books and surveyor query books. We are very lucky in Kildare Local Authority Archive to have examples of each.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: black;\">Most grand jury\u2019s abstract of presentment books are soft or hard bound. All of them are in printed form with occasional hand-written pages (except KCA\/GJ\/2) and very fragile.
