Sheila from Leixlip Library has sent us in a lovely rainbow inspired knit cushion. This knitting recipe would be perfect for those already familiar with knitting and my be a little more difficult for beginners.
What you need:
Double Knitting wool 1 ball in each of the rainbow colours.
Colour codes: 1) Red, 2) Orange, 3) Yellow, 4) Green, 5) Blue,6) Indigo, 7) Violet.
One pair of 4 mm needles
4 coloured buttons
A sewing needle.
First strip.
With 4 mm needles and red wool cast on 6 stitches.Row 1, knit. Row 2 purl. Row 3 .** Knit 2, increase 1, knit to last 2 stitches,Increase 1, knit 2.Row 4. Purl.Continue and repeat rows 3-4 until there are 16 stitches finishing on a purl row.Next row. Knit 2, knit 2 together, knit to last 4 stitches, k2 together, knit 2.Next row: Purl. Repeat the last 2 rows until there are 6 stitches, ending with a purl row.**Now repeat from ** to ** 8 more times. Cast off stitches.Now make three more strips in each of these colours as in the numbers above 3, 5 and 7.
Second strip.With orange wool cast on 16 stitches.Row 1. Knit. Row 2 purl.Row 3.** knit 2, knit 2 together and knit to the last 4 stitches, knit 2 together, k2.Row 4 purl.Now repeat rows 3 and 4 until there are 6 stitches finishing on a purl row.Next row. Knit 2, increase (as per photo) 1 and knit to the last 2 stitches, increase 1 and knit 2.Next row. Purl.Repeat the last 2 rows until you have 16 stitches ending on a purl row.**Repeat from ** to ** 8 more times.Cast off.Make 2 more strips, in each colour 4 and 6 as above.
Place strips in colours of 1-7 as above pin strips together so that the zigzag fits and sew as per photo.Now fold around cushion and sew the 2 sides.
At the top of cushion pick up stitches and knit in a rib (K1, P1) as per photo.Knit required size say 2 inches and make 4 buttonhole spaced evenly as per photo.. Cast off.Do the same on the second side and knit a rib for 3 inches. Cast off.Sew on the 4 buttons.
