The committee of the Kildare Readers Festival have put together a stellar line up for you, with a mixture of limited live, in-person events and live online events with bigger capacity.
Included in this third part of the festival preview is the last of our in person events, the popular Dennis O’Driscoll Walk, and some more of our live online events and workshops, including writing workshops and the presentation of the Michael Mullen and Dennis O’Driscoll awards.

The Outnumbered Poet: Annual Dennis O’Driscoll Walk,
September 26th at 11am, Naas Racecourse
Join us on our annual guided walk as we celebrate internationally renowned poet Dennis O’Driscoll. Dennis lived in Naas until his untimely death in 2012. Seamus Heaney said of him that ‘Dennis was beloved by his friends for his originality as a poet, his acuity as a critic, his probity and courage and merriment as a man. In the essay ‘Walking Out’ from the book “The Outnumbered Poet†which we will read on this walk, we will hear at first hand this acuity.
Sunday September 26th /11am Meet at the Dublin Road entrance to Naas Racecourse. On street parking available. Assemble at the Grassy Knoll.

The Heritage of Brigid-A Sense of Place – Workshop 1 of the Creative Writing and Visual Art Workshop series
October 9th at 2pm on Zoom
This two-hour collaborative, interactive and participatory workshop invites adults in the community to engage in an exploration of Brigid through the theme of place using written and visual forms with writer Shauna Gilligan and artist Margo McNulty.
Gilligan and McNulty will use prompts based on their research findings including, for example, photographs of artefacts and images of Brigid. Participants may, of course, also use prompts personal to them should they wish.
Individual, pair and group work will be part of this workshop.

Brigid and the Hidden Sacred Feminine – Workshop 2 of the Creative Writing and Visual Art Workshop series.
October 9th at 7pm on Zoom
This two hour collaborative workshop invites adults in the community to engage with artist Margo McNulty and writer Shauna Gilligan in guided and prompted oral and visual story telling. Particular focus will be on the relationship of the heritage of Brigid and the sacred feminine.
Group exploration of what the sacred feminine means may include focus on artefacts such as mantles, crosses, ribbons, clothing etc and/or examples of visual and written descriptions which were created by Gilligan and McNulty as part of their collaboration Mantles, funded by Creative Ireland (Kildare and Roscommon County Councils).
Individual, pair and group work will be part of this workshop.

4th annual Michael Mullen Creative Fiction Writing Competition 2021
Awards Presentation, October 14th at 7pm on Zoom
Kildare Library is delighted to host this very special online event to announce the winners of the 4th Annual Michael Mullan Charity Fund Short Story, Flash Fiction, Poetry and Kildare Micro-fiction Competitions 2021.
The winning entries in each competition, selected by judging panel Niamh Boyce, Caroline E. Farrell, John MacKenna and Lynn Buckle, will be read on the night and will be published on the Michael Mullan Charity Fund website and on the Kildare Library and Arts Service website.
All proceeds from the competition are going to support kidney cancer research and treatment at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

The Dennis O’Driscoll Awards,

Regarded as one of the best European poets of his time, Dennis O’Driscoll was a poet, essayist, critic, editor and mentor who made Naas, Co Kildare his home until his death.
The Dennis O’Driscoll Literary Bursary Award is open to both established and emerging writers and critics in all genres. The award for professional writers is to augment their professional practice, particularly research towards the production of new writings. The award for emerging writers supports their professional development/training opportunities.
We introduce this year’s awardees who will read their work, adjudicated this year by Writer in Residence Susan Tomaselli. The awardees will be interviewed by broadcaster Keith Walsh.
