Synopsis: What if having a chance to save humanity comes with a grim price? One that you hate and fear the most? To survive in a ruined world, she must embrace the darkness. Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a walled-in city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten. All that drives Allie is her loathing for them – the vampires who keep humans for food.Â
Until the night Allie herself dies and becomes a vampire. Forced to flee, Allie must pass for human as she joins a ragged group of pilgrims seeking a legend – the cure for the disease that killed off most of civilization and created the rabbids; the bloodthirsty creatures who threaten human and vampire alike.
A couple of problems with that plan though…One, She needs blood and can’t let the humans notice how different she is to them.
Second, she falls for one of the guys in the group.Â
Review: In this grim, lifeless, almost robotic life-style, humans are either living inside the city walls, where they are food for the Vampires and promised some semblance of protection if they can stay alive, or if you choose not to be tagged like a herd of cattle, you flee. Outside the city walls there is no protection from the things that go bump in the night. There’s also not a morsel of food or provisions supplied. You have to fend for yourself, or die trying.Â
In Julie Kagawa’s book the reader becomes immersed in a life-less terrain and shambles of homes, reminders of a ghostly past. The future is governed by formidable vampires with a crude sense of humour. Every day for the main character, Allison Sekemoto, is like the last. With the only constant being the need to scavenge for previsions.Â
If you enjoy young fiction and action with a spark of romance, waste no time grabbing this book, the first in a three part series by this amazingly talented author.
