October “Toby” Daye has been an outsider from birth. As a changeling who is half human half fae, she has been burned by both sides of her heritage and as a result, has retreated to a “normal” life. Unfortunately, The Faerie World has other ideas for her.

She is brought unexpectedly back to the world of the Fae by the shocking murder of Countess Evening Winterrose. Inspired by word of a curse that made up Evening’s dying words, she is brought to investigate, and Toby must resume her former position as knight errant. As she goes back into the Fae society, dealing with people who are neither good or evil, and old alliances, she realizes that there is more at stake than she originally thought. Time is against her as she seeks to find Evening’s killer.

So, I have to admit that this is one of those series that is a little weak in the beginning, but once you get into it, you will love it. I did enjoy this and I will always recommend it. Toby is a kick-ass character and you can really see that in this book. I also love how Seanan McGuire intertwines some of the classic stories of the Fae, i.e., that you can’t thank them, and she is able to mix in her own take on what it is to be Fae. It is a story that is worth reading, even if the start of it is a little slow.
