Maia D’Apliese and her five sisters gather together at their childhood home, Atlantis- an amazing, secluded castle on the shores of Lake Geneva- having been told that their beloved father, who had adopted them all as babies, has died. Each sister is handed a clue to her true heritage – a clue that takes Maia across the world to a crumbling mansion in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is here that she begins to put together the pieces of her story and how she came to grow up with Pa Salt.
Eighty years earlier in Rio’s Belle Epoque of the 1920s, Izabela Bonifacio’ father has ideas on who his daughter should marry. Meanwhile, architect Heitor de Silva Costa is coming up with plans for an enormous statue, to be called Christ the Redeemer, and will soon go to Paris to find the right sculptor to complete his vision. Izabela, who wants to see the world, convinces her father to let her go to Europe with Heitor and his family before she is married. However, once there, in the vibrant cafes of Montparnasse, she meets ambitious young sculptor and she knows her life will never be the same.
This is the first book in a series and it is absolutely amazing. I do think that Maia’s story is the weakest of the stories, but it is worth reading for the other sisters. One of the things that I love about this book is that the story never really goes where you think it will. You have to wait to till the end of the book to realize how the lives are connected. I also love the back-and-forth between the past and the present. It is a very well written and interesting book. If you read this, you will not be disappointed.
