Did you know the library provides a legal and free music and streaming alternative to the likes of YouTube or Spotify? That’s right with our digital library resource, Freegal. You can find this service in the online services section of the Kildare County Council Library and Arts website.

For those who prefer to listen to music on their mobile phone, Freegal is also available as a mobile app on Google Play store, Amazon and Apple App Store. All you need to access the thousands of music labels, artists, albums and millions of songs is your library card number and pin number. Freegal has 44 different music genres containing music from over a hundred countries and hundreds of audio books and playlists. Many of the audio books are also in foreign languages such as German.

Both basic and advanced search options are available in Freegal. Advanced search is very useful when you are looking for a specific song or artist as you can set several filters such as the artist’s name and music genre in the same search. This will give you a much smaller number of relevant results and makes it easier to find the exact song, artist or album you want. On Freegal you can either stream music or download music to your device. However you are only allowed to download three songs per week. You can download videos as well if you want to, but they will use up two of your three download allowances. Freegal also allows you unlimited streaming (basically you can listen to as much music as you want online) when you login to Freegal. You can create your own playlists and even share them with your library via Freegal.

You can see your downloaded music in the “my music” link there is also a “Recently
Played” link is where you can find the music you’ve recently played. So why don’t you give Freegal a try? Try one of the 44 genres or click on an album, song, artist or playlist at random. You never know, you may find a new favourite artist or song!
